Are Wax Melts Safe For Dogs?

February 16th, 2022

If the wax melts, you are going to buy are safe for your dog; it depends on their ingredients. Let’s have a look at what you should avoid when buying wax melts to protect your dog’s health, and yours too.

Ingredients such as paraffin and artificial fragrances can negatively affect your dog’s health. And they are the ones you should be avoiding. They are not good for you and not good for your dog either.

Why?

Paraffin wax is commonly used in candles and wax melts. It’s generally cheaper than soy wax. Therefore you will more likely find in the cheap, mass-produced wax melts. Paraffin is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil and contains benzene, known as a carcinogen.

Don’t get fooled by a label saying ‘ food-grade paraffin.’ As I mentioned above, paraffin is derived from petroleum. And it’s also used for making waxed paper, crayons, waterproofs… and you wouldn’t eat any of it, would you?

How about fragrances?

Fragrances are artificially made aromas. Same as essential oils, they are made of several hundred chemicals. But what is the difference?

Essential oils are created by nature, and they are the perfect natural synergetic blend of these chemicals; they work together to complement each other. Essential oils are used for their therapeutic properties.

On the other hand, fragrance oils are synthesized products. However, sometimes they are derived from essential oils. Fragrances are usually made from petroleum and coal tar. They are specifically designed to mimic the aroma of natural products, i.e., lemon and peppermint scent in most cleaning products. Or artificial fragrances i.e., baby powder. Fragrances are also known as perfumes, perfume oils, aromatic oils, or manufactured scents. Fragrances have no therapeutic properties; they just create an aroma that makes cleaning products more attractive; candles and wax melts, smelling differently than others.

If you are looking for safe wax melts for your dog and yourself, try to avoid these with paraffin and fragrances. When evaporated, they can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. They can also cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory problems for you and your dog, ever triggering asthma.

What People Say...

I recently had to board my two Airedale Terriers and Lakeland Terrier at Vita Canis boarding kennels in Uttoxeter while I was away on holiday. I was very nervous about leaving my dogs in someone else’s care. But I was completely blown away by how well Rachel & Jitka cared for my dogs.

The kennels are clean, spacious, and well-maintained. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. They took the time to get to know my dogs and their individual needs. They were always happy to answer any questions I had, and they kept me updated on my dogs’ progress throughout the stay.

My dogs came home happy, healthy, and well-rested. They were so excited to see me, but they didn’t seem stressed or anxious at all. I could tell my dogs enjoyed their time at Vita Canis boarding kennels.

I would highly recommend Vita Canis boarding kennels to anyone who is looking for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable place to board their dog. I know that my dogs will be staying there again the next time I go on holiday.

I was so happy with my dogs’ care at Vita Canis in Uttoxeter. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a great place to board their dog.
