If you have never heard of it, Small Business Saturday is a non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to shop local and give back to their local communities by shopping small. The day takes place on the first Saturday in December.
As a child, and teenager, and even a young (very young) adult, I have never thought I would be a business owner one day. There were no such things as a small business in Slovakia when I was growing up, and everybody worked for somebody. And that somebody used to belong to the state.
My parents worked at university, and entrepreneurship didn’t run in their veins. We have been told we have to have good results (no, actually we have to have excellent marks – good wasn’t good enough) at school, go to university and get a job. Period.
I didn’t get to uni on my first attempt, so I got a few odd jobs here and there. Then I got to uni, didn’t finish it ( to my parents’ big disappointment), and became a dog groomer.
My small business
In 2000 I opened my first dog grooming salon in Zvolen. At that time, dog grooming wasn’t considered a proper job. If necessary, it was an activity vet would do – just a shave-off, not a bath and styling. Or breeders would do for their pups and their puppies, and even for some friends.
Even though they were proud of me and my small business, the slight disappointment of not going to uni was hanging out there. However, it was getting weaker over the years.
And one day a friend of mine asked me about a job. My salon was very busy, and I was working crazy hours by that time. I mean like 7 am till 10 pm to please all my customers (note: at that time, I was a notorious people-pleaser).
And this friend of mine was a guy I went to uni. Unlike me, he finished the uni and had no job! And now he was asking me for a job!! Me!!
You can imagine the satisfaction when I told my parents this! And they admitted, you can have a great job and fulfilling career without a title.
Since then, we never mentioned my education again.
And do you want to know how did my friend do?
Well, he lasted less than a week. He was late every morning; a few times, he turned up in smelly clothes because he was fishing all night, he had no enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Bye-bye!!
