Picking up poop after your furry friend is not the most glamorous job, that’s for sure. But it’s one of the things which needs to be done. It is part of being a good and responsible pet parent, and it is also part of looking after your doggie. It is only a small task compared to all that unconditional love our pets give us. Don’t you think?
By becoming a grandma, I am more aware of dog & cat waste. Cat poo in our garden drives me crazy as all neighboring cats use our garden as a loo. I must pick up cat poop daily as my grandson likes to play in our garden.
‘Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge’ Jerry Seinfeld.
The estimated number of dogs kept as pets in the UK was about 12.5 million as of 2021. All these dogs are producing about 1000 tonnes of poo every day. Our parks, woods, gardens, and towns would be suffering under all that waste long before it could naturally decompose. If we don’t pick up this poop, it can take up to 12 months to break down entirely. And it won’t work as a fertilizer either due to the dog’s high protein diet. Dog waste is both a human health hazard and an environmental pollutant.
There are a few ways how to pick up your pet’s poo:
*Using waste bags. The easiest option is to keep a waste bag dispenser on your leash. That would mean you will never run out of poo bags, and you will also know when you are running low.
*Using a pooper scooper can be a great option if you struggle to bend or like to keep your distance from your pet’s waste.
*If you are struggling to find the time to clean up your garden after your pet, you could consider using pet waste clean-up services.
What is your preference for doing this unpleasant but necessary chore?
My preference is to use biodegradable, compostable waste bags. They take three to six months to decompose fully. Compared to usual plastic bags, which will take hundreds of years. I always carry the whole mini roll of Pogi’s poo bags in my pocket.
If your walk takes you through the countryside, park, or woodlands, don’t forget to bring poo bags with you, and please be careful as tick season is in full. Remember to protect your dog with Tick Off and yourself with The Bodyguard Insect Repellent Bracelet from Vita Canis.
